GET STARTED
The Get Started series introduces the essential foundations of horsemanship that underpin everything we do with our horses, not just Liberty, but ridden work too (especially our Bridleless work!)
You’ll explore the Principles of Horsemanship and develop an understanding of how horses learn, think and communicate. Alongside the theory, you’ll be introduced to key foundational exercises including Conscious Relaxation, Trust Building, Capturing Connection, Yields and Mirror Me.
These basics are invaluable for developing clear communication, confidence and connection with your horse, providing a strong foundation for all areas of your training.
The series gives you the understanding and tools to get started, before building on these concepts in greater depth through Foundational Liberty.

HEADLIGHTS
Understand what our Headlights are and how our body language affects where we direct our energy.

TIPS FOR TURNING YOUR ENERGY TO NEUTRAL OR OFF
Here's some postural queues for helping you to turn your energy off in your body when you are at rest with our horse. It's so important you have a clear OFF and ON in your energy and body language, so your horse can pick up clearly and what you are asking.

FEEL AND TIMING
-
WHEN TO BE, WHERE TO BE, HOW TO BE AND WHEN TO QUIT
Horsemanship is really knowing when to be, where to be, how to be and when to quit doing what you're doing. This is the key to feel and timing. When you're able to release on your horse THINKING about what you want, thats when things really start to look like magic.

BODY LANGUAGE
-
DRAW AND DRIVE BODY LANGUAGE
Using the right body language with your horse for Draw and Drive can feel counterintuitive to us humans, and often times we can send mixed signals to our horses.

USING THE PRINCIPLES OF HORSEMANSHIP
Mia demos the principles in action and how we can use them in phases - mind, flexion, weight, then the feet, just like our horses!
-
LEADING YOUR HORSE FOR LIBERTY
Here's why we lead our horse's with a "smile" in the rope when we are working towards liberty.
-
THE PARTNERSHIP POSITION
When starting our work in Mirror Me, we like our horses to be in what is called The Partnership Position. This is the place we teach our horses to seek during Mirror Me. Mia demonstrates where it is and why she likes that position best for liberty work.

DRIVING PRESSURE - HOW HORSES COMMUNICATE
Using driving pressure can feel really unnatural to use humans because we are pully-grabby creatures (that's why we invented headcollars and leadropes) but it's much more natural to our horses than steady pressure. Learn how to use driving pressure to better communicate with your horse.
-
WHY HORSES MUST TRUST US FIRST
Trust is a crucial first step in being able to do anything with our horses. They first need to trust us, trust the tools that we are using, and ultimately trust that we are going to keep them safe!
-
CONSCIOUS RELAXATION AS A REWARD
If you can help your horse to let go of physical and mental tension in movement and at standstill with you at liberty, then they will soon start seeking that feel good feeling as a reward.
-
TEACHING AN ANXIOUS HORSE TO LOWER THEIR HEAD CARRIAGE
Mia teaches and anxious horse to lower their head carriage so they can find relaxation and a better feeling in their body.
